FAQs

1. Do I need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?

Yes, travellers from India require a visa to enter Sri Lanka. You can apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) via eta.gov.lk. The process is simple and typically approved within 24–48 hours. At times, visa fees may be waived under bilateral agreements—check for updates before applying.

2. When is the best time to travel?

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination. The south and west coasts (including Bentota, Galle, and Colombo) are best visited from December to April, with sunny skies and minimal rainfall. For the east coast, the dry season runs from May to September.

3. What currency is used and how can I exchange money?

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Foreign currency can be exchanged at the airport, banks, or authorized money changers. Major credit and debit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops. It's advisable to carry some local currency for small purchases and tips.

4. Is vegetarian or Indian-style food available?

Yes, vegetarian meals are widely available, and many restaurants in popular destinations offer Indian cuisine or familiar flavours. Hotels and resorts generally cater well to dietary preferences, including vegetarian, vegan, and non-spicy options.

5. What should I pack?

Light, breathable clothing is ideal for Sri Lanka’s tropical climate. Include swimwear, sun protection, insect repellent, and comfortable footwear. When visiting temples or religious sites, carry a scarf or shawl to cover shoulders and knees as a sign of respect.

6. Is Sri Lanka safe for tourists?

Sri Lanka is considered safe for travellers, with welcoming locals and a well-established tourism infrastructure. As with any destination, it’s recommended to take standard precautions with personal belongings and follow local guidelines, especially at religious or cultural sites.

7. Will my mobile phone work there?

International roaming is available, but it can be expensive. A good alternative is purchasing a local SIM card (such as Dialog or Mobitel) at the airport or in town, which offers good data plans and coverage across the country.

8. What is a typical travel budget per day?

Mid-range travel typically costs around LKR 10,000–15,000 per day (approx. ₹2,500–₹4,000), covering meals, local transport, and activities. Tipping is customary: around 10% in restaurants and LKR 100–200 for guides, porters, or drivers.
